We are very happy to announce the winner of this season’s European Tree Planting Day award: Maasheggenmooi from the Netherlands! \ud83c\udf89<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What a journey it has been. Across five separate planting events, this dedicated team has achieved something truly extraordinary. They planted more than 12,000 native trees and bushes across five different locations, creating an incredible 2.9 kilometres of new biodiverse hedgerows in the Maasheggen area, UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2018 and the only area in the Netherlands with this status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Considered the oldest Dutch cultural landscape, the Maasheggen offers a unique mosaic of meadows and fields separated by dense, thorny hedges. This project gives new impulse to the century-old craft of hedge laying or “heggenvlechten”, creating living fences that historically kept cattle in without the need for wire. The hedges also are seen as a “Living Monument”, as they create a highly diverse ecosystem that provides a continuous habitat for a massive range of biodiversity, including rare birds, badgers, and insects. The UNESCO “Man and the Biosphere” status specifically recognizes the area as a place where nature conservation and sustainable human activity (agriculture and tourism) exist in perfect harmony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beyond the impressive figures, what truly sets Maasheggenmooi\u2019s work apart is their consistency, dedication, and long-term vision. Returning event after event, they have shown what sustained community commitment looks like. Their work strengthens ecosystems, supports biodiversity, and connects people to their landscape in a deeply meaningful way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is exactly the kind of impact the European Tree Planting Day movement exists to celebrate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winnaar van the European Tree Planting Day Award!!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n We zijn erg blij om de winnaar van de European Tree Planting Day-prijs van dit seizoen bekend te maken: Maasheggenmooi uit Nederland!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Wat een reis is het geweest. Tijdens vijf afzonderlijke plantevenementen heeft dit toegewijde team iets echt buitengewoons bereikt. Ze plantten meer dan 12.000 inheemse bomen en struiken op vijf verschillende locaties, waardoor een ongelooflijke 2,9 kilometer nieuwe biodiverse heggen ontstonden in het Maasheggen-gebied, UNESCO Biosphere Reserve sinds 2018 en het enige gebied in Nederland met deze status.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n De Maasheggen wordt beschouwd als het oudste Nederlandse culturele landschap en biedt een uniek moza\u00efek van weiden en velden, gescheiden door dichte, doornige heggen. Dit project geeft een nieuwe impuls aan het eeuwenoude ambacht van het leggen van heggen of “heggenvlechten”, het cre\u00ebren van levende hekken die historisch gezien vee binnenhielden zonder dat er draad nodig was. De heggen worden ook gezien als een “Levend Monument”, omdat ze een zeer divers ecosysteem cre\u00ebren dat een continue habitat biedt voor een enorm scala aan biodiversiteit, waaronder zeldzame vogels, dassen en insecten. De UNESCO-status “Mens en de biosfeer” erkent het gebied specifiek als een plek waar natuurbehoud en duurzame menselijke activiteit (landbouw en toerisme) in perfecte harmonie bestaan.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Naast de indrukwekkende cijfers, is wat het werk van Maasheggenmooi echt onderscheidt, hun consistentie, toewijding en langetermijnvisie. Ze komen evenement na evenement terug en hebben laten zien hoe aanhoudende betrokkenheid van de gemeenschap eruit ziet. Hun werk versterkt ecosystemen, ondersteunt biodiversiteit en verbindt mensen op een zeer zinvolle manier met hun landschap.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Dit is precies het soort impact dat de European Tree Planting Day-beweging bestaat om te vieren.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Proficiat aan het hele Maasheggenmooi team! En een speciale erkenning aan de drijvende kracht achter dit initiatief, Lars van Peij, voor al zijn inspanningen om tradities levend te houden en een langdurige erfenis op te bouwen.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Onze diepste dankbaarheid gaat ook uit naar elke groep, school, vereniging en vrijwilliger die dit seizoen bij ons heeft geplant.
